In a time when our nation is struggling to hold onto its founding values, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has once again stood up for common sense and the American way of life. On the eve of New York City’s mayoral election, Governor Abbott joked that he would impose a “100 percent tariff” on anyone moving to Texas from New York if voters there elect Zohran Mamdani, a radical socialist, as their next mayor.
Now, let’s be clear: the governor’s words were not meant as a literal policy. He knows, as we all do, that you can’t actually tax people for moving from one state to another. But that’s not the point. His message wasn’t about taxes. It was about protecting Texas from the dangerous ideas that have destroyed once-great cities like New York.
Governor Abbott’s warning was a bold way of saying, “Don’t bring your problems here.” He is sounding the alarm about the steady stream of left-wing refugees fleeing the mess they helped create in states like New York and California. These people are running from high taxes, rising crime, and government overreach — but many still carry the same failed ideas in their pockets. And when they settle in places like Texas, they often vote the same way they did back home, threatening to ruin their new communities.
This is about more than political jokes. It’s about preserving what makes Texas, and America, great. In Texas, we still believe in hard work, low taxes, strong families, and the right to live free of government interference. We don’t want New York’s problems. We don’t want their crime, their socialism, or their broken promises. And we certainly don’t want a mayor like Zohran Mamdani.
Mamdani is a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, a man who wants to raise taxes on the successful, give away free services, and freeze rent. These may sound nice to some, but they are nothing more than recycled ideas from failed communist regimes around the world. History has shown us again and again: when government gives everything away for free, it eventually runs out of other people’s money.
Worse still, Mamdani has little respect for the traditions and values that built this country. He wants to change everything — how we pay for things, how our cities are run, and even how families raise their children. If elected, he would be the first Muslim and Indian American mayor of New York City. That, in itself, should not matter. America welcomes people of all backgrounds. But what does matter are his radical ideas — ideas that threaten the freedoms we hold dear.
President Trump, standing firmly for the American people, has rightly called Mamdani a communist. He has even said New York City could lose federal funding if they elect someone who wants to turn the city into a socialist playground. That’s leadership. That’s putting America first.
Governor Abbott is doing the same for Texas. He is sending a message to the rest of the country: Texas will not bend to the left. We will not allow the failed policies of the East Coast to infect the heartland. We will protect our families, our jobs, and our way of life.
It’s time we all took a hard look at what is happening in cities like New York. The rise of leaders like Mamdani is a warning sign — a bright red flag waving in the wind. If we do not stand up now, we risk losing the country we love.
Texas is drawing a line in the sand. And the rest of America should take notice.
