According to a Rasmussen Reports poll issued last week, the majority of respondents do not feel that the numerous political indictments would harm former President Trump’s chances in 2024.
“Will the prosecution of Trump damage or boost his prospects of winning the presidential election next year?” was the question posed to respondents in the poll.
The majority (55%) predicted that the prosecutions would either benefit the former president or have no effect at all; 23% predicted that they would be beneficial and 32% predicted that they would “not make much difference.” Overall, 35% of respondents said it would harm Trump.
Democrats continue to be significantly more certain that the political investigation will affect him – by a margin of 48 percent. Nearly a quarter said it won’t change anything.
The majority of Republicans and independents think Trump will benefit from the political investigations or that they won’t have much of an impact.
“43% of those questioned who supported Trump in 2020 don’t think the criminal accusations against the former president will hurt his chances of winning in 2024. Only 18% of Trump supporters feel that the president-elect’s prospects of winning next year’s election will be negatively impacted by the prosecution of Trump, while 39% think that his chances will be positively impacted and 35% think that it won’t make much of a difference.”
“Forty-nine percent among all Likely Voters believe it’s likely they’ll support Trump in the upcoming election, with 33% saying they’re Very Likely to do so. In 2024, 47% of people say they won’t vote for Trump, including 40% who think they are Not At All Likely to do so.”
The study, which had a +/- 3 percent margin of error and was conducted among 989 potential US voters from July 23 to 25, 2023, comes after months of the political prosecution of the former president. His first indictment, handed out in March by a Manhattan grand jury and the Soros-affiliated DA Alvin Bragg, included 34 charges of falsifying company documents relating to alleged “hush money” payments. He has already been charged twice since beginning his presidential candidacy.
Shortly after, Special Counsel Jack Smith of the U.S. Dept. of Justice (DOJ) filed a federal indictment against him, charging him with improper handling of secret material.
Trump stated this past week that the January 6 inquiry also had him as a target.
“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor for Joe Biden’s DOJ, delivered a letter, stating that I’m the TARGET for the January 6 Grand Jury probe, and he gave me just four 4 days to present myself to the Grand Jury, which virtually always indicates an Arrest as well as Indictment,” he wrote on Truth Social.
Trump continued by denouncing the militarized DOJ, saying, “This has become a never-ending war since the moment that I headed down the escalator inside Trump Tower.”
“Todd Blanche along with John Lauro, two of Trump’s lawyers, reportedly had meetings with prosecutors in Smith’s office, according to NBC. According to the article, they were instructed to “anticipate an indictment.”
