The Chicago police reject such a theory.
Chicago in 2024 will not resemble Chicago in 1968. As the curtain rises on this year’s Democratic National Convention, law enforcement officers and protest organizers alike pledge to uphold that goal, as the Wall Street Journal revealed over the weekend. “Both sides assert their commitment to preserving calm amid the thousands of demonstrators anticipated to oppose the Gaza War, abortion prohibitions, and other contentious matters.”
Maybe that’s just wishful thinking. On social media, there are claims that over a thousand cops are reporting absenteeism.
This makes perfect logic, even if we are unable to independently verify it. Given their recent history, who in the police department is willing to risk their lives for these people?
Governor J.B. Pritzker (D-Ill.) reports that 150 Illinois National Guard personnel are “on alert” for the Democratic National Convention.
Pritzker said, “They are truly on standby.” They’re standing around the edge. No one anticipates that we’ll need to use them for anything important. Furthermore, we aim to ensure an adequate number of law enforcement personnel, trained as police officers and uniformed.
While preventing violence and preventing deaths is undoubtedly our goal, there have been signs of impending instability for several months. More than a thousand police officers calling in sick means that they will be drastically short-staffed, which is a surefire way to end badly.
As early as Sunday night, demonstrators interrupted a gathering for delegates and greeted them with signs that said, “Welcome to hell week.”
Social media footage shows that hundreds of protesters crowded the streets, vowing to “bring the conflict home,” and they couldn’t wait to confront well-known Democrats about the war in Gaza. As national Democrats celebrate the selection of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, 60, and Vice President Kamala Harris, 59, there will likely be protests throughout the week.”
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, “At one point, protestors attacked a delegate party at Navy Pier when one rabble-rouser approached the stage, grabbed the microphone, and accused the gathering of “supporting a genocide.” An anti-Israel organization uploaded a video showing the demonstrator saying, “The Harris-Biden government keeps providing money to Israel,” just before they pulled him off stage. “Palestine must be freed!”
Things will only get worse.
