A Democrat congresswoman from Florida just got nailed for 25 ethics violations after stealing millions in federal disaster relief funds, laundering the cash through her family’s healthcare company, funneling it into her own congressional campaign, and — because why not — treating herself to a 3.14-carat yellow diamond ring. But please, tell us again how Donald Trump is the real threat to democracy.
Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, everybody. Give her a round of applause!
Here’s how the grift worked. Back in July 2021, Florida accidentally sent $5 million in FEMA COVID relief funds to Trinity Healthcare Services — a company run by Cherfilus-McCormick and her brother Edwin. A misplaced decimal turned a $50,000 payment into a $5 million windfall. Normal, honest people would have called the state and said, “Hey, you made a mistake.” Democrats call that “Tuesday.”
Instead, Cherfilus-McCormick and her brother allegedly laundered the cash through multiple accounts to hide where it came from. Approximately $3.6 million of those stolen federal funds ended up in her congressional campaign war chest. She then used that money to portray herself as a “self-funded” candidate — a woman of the people who was so passionate about public service that she bankrolled her own campaign to the tune of $6 million.
Passionate indeed. The year before the FEMA money “accidentally” landed in her lap, Cherfilus-McCormick earned $86,000 a year. The year it arrived? Her income magically spiked to over $6 million. Ethics Committee investigator Brittney Pescatore told the panel that “suddenly there is an overflow of money and it all goes to her for reasons that are not dictated.”
Gee, what a mystery.
She won her Democratic primary by five votes. Five. Out of more than 49,000 cast. She bought a congressional seat with stolen FEMA money and squeaked in by the thinnest margin imaginable. That’s not democracy — that’s a heist movie with a terrible script.
But wait, it gets juicier. The House Ethics panel also found that her campaign illegally accepted more than $800,000 from a Haitian oil company — a firm largely funded by the Haitian government. A sitting member of Congress took nearly a million dollars from a foreign government to fund her reelection. Where have we heard accusations like that before? Oh right — Democrats spent four years screaming that Trump was a Russian puppet based on a fake dossier that Hillary Clinton paid for. Meanwhile, their own caucus member was literally cashing checks from Port-au-Prince.
Her lawyer’s defense was pure comedy gold. William Barzee told the ethics panel that because Cherfilus-McCormick is of Haitian descent, it was “not unusual” for millions of dollars to be divvied up via “handshake agreements” instead of formal legal documents. That’s his actual argument. “Your Honor, my client’s culture doesn’t believe in paper trails.” Try that one next time the IRS comes knocking on your door and see how far it gets you.
He also claimed she “was entitled to that money.” Entitled to FEMA disaster relief funds intended for COVID victims. Unreal.
The bipartisan ethics subcommittee — four Democrats, four Republicans — reviewed over 33,000 documents, interviewed 28 witnesses, issued 59 subpoenas, and deliberated past midnight before finding her guilty on 25 of 27 charges. This wasn’t a partisan witch hunt. Her own party voted to convict her.
And yet, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries still won’t call for her resignation. “Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick is entitled to the presumption of innocence,” Jeffries declared, adding he’s “a hard no” on expulsion. Of course he is. Democrats only demand resignations from Republicans. When one of their own steals disaster relief money from taxpayers and buys a fat diamond ring with the proceeds, she’s “entitled to the presumption of innocence.”
At least one Democrat showed a spine. Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez said bluntly, “You can’t crime your way into legitimate power. She should resign or be removed.” Somebody buy that woman a drink.
Cherfilus-McCormick still faces 15 federal criminal charges — conspiracy, theft of government funds, money laundering, illegal campaign contributions, and falsifying tax documents — carrying up to 53 years in prison. Attorney General Pam Bondi nailed it: “Using disaster relief funds for self-enrichment is a particularly selfish, cynical crime.”
This is what Democrats do when they get their hands on power. They steal. They grift. They funnel taxpayer money to their families, their campaigns, and their jewelry collections. Then they lecture the rest of us about “equity” and “social justice” while their voters keep pulling the lever because there’s a D next to the name.
She wore the diamond ring in her official congressional portrait, by the way. Smiled right into the camera with stolen FEMA money sparkling on her finger. That’s not just corruption — that’s a Democrat flexing on every taxpayer in America.
