On this week’s “Hugh Hewitt Show,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican running for president in 2024, said that there had been people in the government who attempted to prevent the elected president from doing what they wanted to do, like leaks throughout the Trump administration. He also said that he was going to fire the State Department workers who complained regarding the Biden administration’s backing of Israel because “They do not have the authority to go against rules. Their duty is to carry out the rules.”
“I think the problem is that you are dealing with a concentration of power that has been cut off from constitutional accountability,” DeSantis declared. “Some of this occurs because the chosen bodies aren’t being taken care of. For instance, the DOJ and FBI, along with many Republicans, correctly point out the use of weapons and power abuse. But leaders of both parties haven’t done much to stop that for decades. They haven’t used their power to spend money. So I believe it is all of those departments. The question is whether they are abusing their power without a clear legal reason to do so. There are a lot of things that people don’t want to happen in the system with all the rules and laws. They’re following laws that aren’t very clear and making policy that makes a huge difference.”
He went on, “Now, here’s some intelligence as well as national security: when former President Trump held office, a number of those individuals worked to stop his plans. Sometimes, when he talked on a phone with a foreign president, The Washington Post would be able to get a hold of it. And it was kind of like, “Hey, you might have 270 or more electoral votes, but they continue to run the show in the end.” The Constitution wasn’t created that way. I believe we require further constitutional responsibility because of this. There are three parts of our government. There are not four parts of our government. If the candidate wins the Electoral College, the president possesses the constitutional power and duty to carry out the plan. These organizations need to do their jobs. I would kick some of these individuals out of the State Dept. who are upset about having to stand up for Israel. It’s not their right to break the rules. Their job is to carry out the rules. We’re so far from that now, though, that our government doesn’t really represent the people of the United States.”
