In the past few years, we have seen our nation tested in ways that strike at the very heart of who we are. Under the previous Biden administration, Americans of faith—particularly Christians—were pushed to the side, mocked, and even threatened simply for holding to their beliefs. Those in power at the time seemed to believe that religious freedom was a relic of the past, something to be trampled if it got in the way of their radical agenda.
But the American people have spoken. We are not ready to give up on our faith, our families, or our freedoms. A new report from the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty shows that support for religious freedom is now at an all-time high in 2025. This is a remarkable turnaround, and it is no accident. It reflects a deep yearning among Americans to return to the principles that made this country great.
During the Biden years, countless attacks were launched against people of faith. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission tried to force Christian employers to support abortions. They also demanded that Christians pay for so-called “gender-affirming” surgeries, which go against both science and Scripture. The Department of Health and Human Services even tried to ban Christian adoption agencies unless they bowed to the left’s twisted views on sex and marriage.
Perhaps most disturbing of all, the FBI under Biden labeled conservative Catholics as potential domestic terrorists. They even talked about spying on churches. This is the kind of thing we expect to hear about in communist countries—not in the United States of America.
But through it all, the faithful did not back down. And today, we have real reason to hope. The 2025 Religious Freedom Index shows that more Americans now support religious liberty than ever before. The score reached 71 out of 100—up from 66 in 2020. That may not sound like much, but it reflects a powerful and growing movement.
More than half of Americans now believe that religion should be welcomed in public life. They want to live in a country where people can speak openly about their faith, where parents can protect their children from harmful school lessons, and where no one is forced to violate their conscience.
In fact, 73% of Americans now support a parent’s right to opt out of school programs that go against their values. That’s up from just 63% a few years ago. Support is also strong—77%—for allowing public education funding to be used at religious schools.
These numbers show that families are waking up. They see what is happening in public schools, where children are being pushed into confusion and sin under the banner of “inclusion.” And they are saying: enough.
The Supreme Court’s recent ruling in Mahmoud v. Taylor was another sign of this shift. The Court sided with parents in Maryland who didn’t want their children exposed to LGBT propaganda. A majority of Americans—62%—stood with those parents. This is what it means to protect our children and our faith.
There is still work to do. Some areas of the survey show that Americans remain divided, such as on the issue of so-called “conversion therapy.” But the trend is clear: we are moving back toward the values that built this nation.
As Mark Rienzi, president of the Becket Fund, said, “Our first freedom belongs at the heart of our culture.” He is right. Religious liberty is not just about one group or one issue. It is the foundation of a free and moral society.
Now is the time to stand firm. We must teach our children the truth. We must support leaders who defend our faith. And we must remember that the strength of our nation rests, not in government power, but in the courage of families who live by God’s truth.
The American people have not forgotten who they are. With President Trump back in the White House, we are once again a nation that honors God, protects the innocent, and defends the rights of all believers. Let us hold fast to that path.
