There are indications from certain Republicans that they would not back a border-related proposal that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to press this week.
The bill will now be resurrected as a stand-alone proposition after failing to go earlier this year when it was bundled with other issues like aid to Ukraine.
“The bogus border measure will fail once more because it does not significantly protect the border; rather, it only serves to maintain the absurdly high levels of illegal immigration.”
Schumer wrote to a beloved colleague on X, “The Senate will resume discussing the critical matter of border security this week.” According to him, “this coming week, the Senate is preparing to take up the bipartisan Border Act as a standalone vote.”
The majority leader Steve Scalise, Majority Whip Tom Emmer, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik all stated in a statement that the bill “would be dead on arrival” if it made it to the House.
“Congressional Democrats have been silent for almost three years as the Biden Administration has allowed terrorists, millions of illegal immigrants, and criminal drug gangs to enter our country. By putting up a bill for a vote that has already failed in the Senate and would effectively codify many of the catastrophic Biden open border policies that initially caused this crisis, Leader Schumer is now attempting to shield his vulnerable members. The four House Republicans declared in a statement that “should the bill reach the House, it would be fatal.”
GOP Sen. Mike Lee of Utah tweeted in a post on his @BasedMikeLee X account, “If Schumer cares about the border, he should instruct Biden to enforce the law.” He went on, “Biden already has the authority to solve it.” “This week’s bill that Schumer is promoting would make issues worse,” he continued. “Much worse.”
A tweet on Lee’s @SenMikeLee X account said, “The false border bill will fail again since it accomplishes nothing to actually protect the border—just solidify obscene levels of illegal immigration. It is ironic that some Democrats would vote against it because it goes too far for them to even pretend to restrict illegal immigration.”
