Hundreds of former staffers who worked for Republican leaders have now backed Vice President Kamala Harris, saying that “another four years” of a Trump government would “hurt real, everyday Americans.”
We got a letter from more than 200 former staffers for former President George W. Bush, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). In it, they say they are getting back together to support Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D).
The letter says, “We get together today with new George H.W. Bush graduates to reaffirm our 2020 comments and, for the first time, say together that we’ll be voting for Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz this November.”
The message from the former staff members comes after hundreds of Bush and McCain staff members backed Vice President Joe Biden for president in 2020.
David Bentley, who worked as McCain’s legislative staff assistant, signed the letter. So did Tomas Bilbao, who was Bush’s deputy director of operations at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and Vicki Blanton, who was Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign director of scheduling.
In the message, the aides also say, “Of course, we have plenty of honest, ideological differences with Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz. That was bound to happen.”
In the letter, the aides say more:
“Trump will hurt real people and weaken our holy institutions for another four years with his dangerous goals like Project 2025. As long as Trump and his ally JD Vance bow down to dictators like Vladimir Putin and ignore our friends, democracy movements will be in grave danger abroad.”
Former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger is one of the people who have also said they back Harris. Although Kinzinger was speaking at the DNC, he said that the Republican Party was “no longer conservative.”
