House Speaker Mike Johnson announced this week that, in the wake of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, he will be pressing Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to step down.
Cheatle announced on Monday that she will not be leaving her post in response to criticism directed at her agency about possible security lapses that may have resulted in Trump’s Saturday shooting wound in Butler, Pennsylvania, by a sniper. Johnson stated on “America’s Newsroom” that he intends to demand Cheatle’s resignation due to the event itself and her responses to press questions.
“We’re going to get moving fast. On Monday, I’ll be forming a task force, a special task force within the House. We will proceed in this manner because it will be a more targeted approach, as stated by Johson. It moves more quickly. There aren’t many formalities to follow, and we will be able to subpoena that task force. Republican and Democratic investigators will work together to swiftly get to the bottom of this so that the American people may receive just compensation. Following the attempted murder, I spoke with Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas over the phone in a matter of hours. At the moment, he is unable to provide adequate responses. Since then, I’ve had conversations with the Director of National Intelligence and FBI officials.
“Let’s put it this way: there are legitimate questions. He went on, “The answers have not come in.” “I believe they are compiling data. We will also carry it out. Accountability is required for this. It was unacceptable. There were undoubtedly security breaches. You don’t need to be an expert in special operations to understand this, and we’ll soon uncover the truth.”
Is Johnson of the opinion that Cheatle ought to resign? questioned host Dana Perino.
“I’m also going to request her resignation. Look, outside the classified portions, I believe it’s unacceptable,” Johnson commented. “Everyone is aware of these facts. Her explanation to the media that there was a tilt on the roof raised questions about safety. Come on. It is not washable. Additionally, I believe she has demonstrated her priorities.”
Speaking with the Daily Caller News Foundation, security specialists and retired Secret Service officers said that the explanation of the sloped roof is illogical.
Before the attempted murder, former FBI agent and chief security expert Peter Yachmetz of Yachmetz Consulting Group saw that the gunman was wandering about on the “unsafe” roof.
“He was unaffected by the hill,” Yachmetz explained to the DCNF.
