Parasite Threat Creeps Closer to U.S. Border

A troubling threat is creeping northward toward our homeland, and it comes not from foreign armies or radical ideologies, but from a tiny, flesh-eating parasite. The New World screwworm, a deadly larva that targets both animals and humans, has been found dangerously close to the United States border, in the Mexican town of Sabinas Hidalgo. This is the most northern case yet, and it should serve as a loud wake-up call for every American — especially for our ranchers, farmers, and those who care deeply about the safety and stability of our food supply.

The screwworm fly, also known by its scientific name Cochliomyia hominivorax, lays its eggs in open wounds of warm-blooded animals. When the eggs hatch, the larvae begin to eat the flesh of the host. It is not only horrific but highly dangerous. This parasite can infect cattle, horses, and even humans. The threat is real, and it is urgent.

Mexico has already reported more than 500 active cases in its southern regions, and now that the parasite has reached Nuevo Leon, just south of the Texas border, the risk to American livestock has never been higher. Our ranchers, who work tirelessly to provide food for our families, are now staring down a crisis they did not create, but one they must now prepare to face.

The United States government, under strong leadership, has wisely suspended imports of live cattle from Mexico. This is not just a matter of economics — it is a matter of national security. We cannot afford to let this parasite cross our border. As U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins rightly said, “We will not rely on Mexico to defend our industry, our food supply, or our way of life.” That is the kind of clear-headed, America-first thinking we need.

This is also a sobering reminder that we must return to self-reliance. For years, we have allowed our food systems to become overly dependent on global supply chains. Massive meatpacking plants, many owned by foreign interests, have become gatekeepers for our food. That must change. As Texas rancher Mollie Engelhart pointed out, we need more local food processing. We need to increase herd sizes here at home, and we need to encourage regional packing plants that can serve our communities directly.

The screwworm crisis should also remind us of the importance of strong borders. Some may scoff at the idea that a bug could be a national threat, but history tells a different story. In the mid-20th century, it took years and millions of dollars to rid the U.S. of this parasite. We cannot let it return because of weak enforcement or bureaucratic delays.

Let us also consider our farmers and ranchers — the backbone of rural America. They are not just providers of food; they are stewards of the land and guardians of our traditions. They cannot fight this battle alone. They need the full support of our government and our people. They need us to prioritize their work, their land, and their livestock over foreign trade deals or political correctness.

The threat of the screwworm is not just about cattle. It is about protecting our way of life. It is about ensuring that American families have safe, affordable food on their tables. It is about teaching our children the value of hard work, self-reliance, and vigilance.

We must stand together, as one nation under God, to confront this challenge. We must defend our borders, support our farmers, and restore the strength of our local food systems. The screwworm may be small, but our response must be mighty. This is not just about a parasite — it is about preserving the soul of our nation.
