Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is fed up with illegal immigration in Texas, and he declared this week that charter buses will be used to transport illegal immigrants to Washington, D.C., where they will be dropped off at the steps of the United States Capitol.
At a press conference to announce the measures his administration would take in response to the Biden administration’s decision to withdraw Title 42, Abbott said that he expects “many illegal immigrants” will arrive as a result of these changes.
To assist local officials who are dealing with masses of illegal immigrants being dropped off by the Biden administration, Texas is providing charter buses to transport these unlawful migrants who have been left behind by the Biden administration to Washington, D.C., according to Abbott.
“We will be sending them to the US Capitol, where the Biden administration will be able to better respond to the demands of folks that they’re permitting to cross our border,” he continued.
He also instructed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to execute the project.
According to Fox News reporter Bill Melugin, state officials said they were prepared to deploy up to 900 charter buses.
In response to the threat of coronavirus infections among illegal immigrants, the Trump administration adopted Title 42. Experts are concerned that without the rule, hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants and refugee applicants would swarm across the US-Mexico border.
Immigration reform opponents were quick to condemn Abbott for his statement.
“This is a sick and depraved stunt that will only exacerbate militarization and violence against asylum seekers!” United We Dream’s official account added, “We have the capacity to welcome refugees and de-escalate situations with compassion, but Abbott has chosen to deal with people violently instead.”
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) was one of the critics of the Biden administration’s decision to revoke Title 42.
“Title 42 has been an important weapon in the fight against COVID-19 infection and in curbing the flow of migrants at our southern border. This year, we are already seeing an unprecedented increase in migrants, and if the Biden Administration ends Title 42 policy, it will just get worse,” Manchin added.
“We’re not nearly prepared to deal with that number,” he added.
