Letitia James, the attorney general of New York State, has stated that there are fewer hurdles preventing “bad actors” and is thus requesting that social media firms crack down on purported falsehoods.
According to reports, James wrote to at least ten major companies, including Microsoft-dominated OpenAI, Meta, and Google.
According to reports, the attorney general made an effort to alert businesses to false information about the presidential election based on artificial intelligence.
According to ABC News, James stated, “While disinformation has been a worry in prior elections, obstacles that prohibit bad actors from generating fraudulent or misleading content have eroded considerably with the emergence of Gen AI.”
“You are not secure from the law just because you are a keyboard warrior.”
Furthermore, James stated that AI technologies developed by well-known platforms have grown “increasingly popular and simple to use and misuse,” according to reports.
According to reports, the state representative has asked the tech giants to meet face-to-face so they can discuss the measures they are taking to shield customers from purportedly false material. However, the official avoided mentioning any duties to comply with the demands.
It’s unclear if Elon Musk’s X platform is part of these tech businesses. The report gained widespread distribution as a syndicated news article across the country; however, the Walt Disney-owned business failed to disclose the complete text of the letter or the complete list of recipients.
All of the duplicated articles referenced a video that Musk posted featuring Kamala Harris’ artificial intelligence (AI) voice. Governor Gavin Newsom of California threatened to take legislative action over the video, but Musk responded with mockery.
The papers also included robocalls purporting to be from President Biden, advising callers to “save your vote” for November and steer clear of other primaries.
However, the White House did not mention its objections to “cheap fakes,” a reference to Democratic allegations that Biden’s deteriorating appearance was solely due to video doctoring by right-wing agitators.
Biden’s opponents, including Democratic financiers, activists, and like-minded celebrities like George Clooney, turned against him in a matter of weeks following the allegations.
Clooney said it was “devastating” to disclose that Biden’s mental state had changed from 2010 to 2020.
He stated, “He was the same man we all saw in the debate [with Donald Trump].”
There are unprecedented obstacles to free expression, particularly in other countries such as the UK, where there have been several arrests for allegedly spreading hate speech and false information online.
Even if accused criminals are abroad, “we will come after you,” declared the commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in London.
The commissioner went on, “Being a digital warrior does not make you secure from the law.”
