Thomas Matthew Crooks, the former President Donald Trump assassin, was carrying a transmitter connected to explosives in his vehicle.
Investigators hypothesized that by setting off the explosives and deflecting attention from himself, Crooks may have “planned to cause a distraction during the shooting.”
Shortly before Crooks opened fire, witnesses called the police to report seeing him on a roof. When Crooks pointed a weapon at an officer who had ascended to his position, the cop fled. After a little while, Crooks started shooting at Trump, and before the police could find him, they shot him dead. During the shooting, Crooks murdered one individual and gravely wounded two others, grazing the former president.
Because he had “something to do,” the gunman decided to take the shooting day off from work at Bethel Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on July 13. The hospital “offers personalized post-hospital skilled nursing care in a cozy setting,” and he reportedly promised them he would see them the following day.
Before the incident, Crooks traveled an hour north to the demonstration. Subsequently, the police discovered two remote-controlled explosive devices, three fully filled magazines, and a bulletproof vest inside the car.
Around 3 p.m., Crooks had parked his car someplace and utilized a rangefinder—a device that measures distances—to pass past a security screening area before taking a shot at a target. They watched him until he left the area, said security guards.
After that, Crooks’ whereabouts are unknown, but according to CNN, police believe he walked back to his car to get his father’s firearm before scaling the rooftop and firing at Trump by “climbing on top of the building’s air conditioning system and hauling himself up.”
After turning to glance at a chart he was displaying to the rally attendees, Trump may have suffered far more serious ear damage that would have required immediate medical attention.
His motivation for the shooting is still a mystery, since, according to CNN, a check of his computer and phone by law enforcement produced no noteworthy evidence. According to a 1997 Secret Service investigation examining assassination attempts made since 1949, there is no sign that suggests someone might try to kill a well-known individual. Nonetheless, much like Crooks, two-thirds of all assailants were characterized as “social isolates.”
More information on the Secret Service’s response to the event is expected to surface in the coming days as a result of the many investigations into the incident that have been launched by the House, Senate, and President Joe Biden.
