For too long, America has allowed foreign nations—especially China—to control the supply of rare earth elements. These are special minerals like gallium and cobalt that are used in everything from smartphones to jet engines. They are also essential for making electric cars, wind turbines, and advanced weapons. Right now, China controls nearly 80% of the rare earths that America needs. That means if China decides to cut off supply, our country could be in serious trouble. This new mineral stockpile will help stabilize prices, protect American companies, and keep our supply chains running even in times of crisis.
What makes this project different is that it isn’t just for the government—it’s for private companies too. Big names like General Motors, Boeing, and Google have already signed on. These companies rely heavily on rare earths and are eager to work with the government to make sure they’re not left scrambling if China pulls the plug.
The way it works is smart. Companies agree to buy a certain amount of minerals at a set price in the future. They also pay a fee up front and list what materials they need. In return, they get access to the stockpile. That means stability for their business and security for our nation. It’s a win-win.
Of course, none of this would be necessary if America still led the world in rare earth production. We once did. But environmental rules and high costs pushed much of that production overseas. China didn’t mind the pollution. They were happy to take over and dominate the market. And now we are paying the price.
President Trump is determined to fix that. He’s already made investments in American mining companies and signed rare earth deals with friendly nations like Australia and Japan. He’s planning to push for more deals at a major summit in Washington this week. The message is clear: America will no longer give away its future to communist China.
