Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), the Democratic contender for vice president, and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), the Republican nominee, have decided to debate on October 1 on CBS in New York City.
Walz wrote on X this week, saying, “See you on October 1, JD.”
A day later, Vance shared on social media that he had accepted the parameters set out by CBS and expressed his desire for the two to debate again.
“President Trump has already challenged Kamala to three debates because he believes that the American people should have as many as possible,” he said. “I accept both the CNN debate on September 18th and the CBS debate on October 1st.” I’m excited to meet you at both!
At first, Vance and the team of former President Donald Trump were hesitant to negotiate a debate because Harris had accepted CBS’s request for a head-to-head in July or August before Trump had even revealed his running partner.
During the Republican National Convention last month, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said, “General election debate plans cannot be completed until Democrats publicly decide on their nominee, given the continuous political instability surrounding Crooked Joe Biden and the Democrat Party.” “Many Democrats, including Barack Hussein Obama, have a strong belief that Kamala Harris is a Marxist fake who is unable to defeat President Trump, and they are still waiting for someone ‘better.’”
“Thus, it would be unsuitable to arrange meetings with Harris, as Democrats may still decide otherwise,” he continued.
Since Harris introduced Walz as her second in command last week, the governor’s 24 years of National Guard service have been a source of teasing between Vance and Walz.
This week in Los Angeles, Walz addressed the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Convention, saying, “These folks are criticizing me for my record of service.” To be very clear, I take immense pride in the work I have done for our nation. Furthermore, I really think that you should never disparage another individual’s service record. I only have a few simple words to say to everyone brave enough to wear the uniform of our wonderful nation, including my opponent: thank you for your sacrifice and service.
Trump and Harris continued to negotiate in private and public until they settled on September 10 for their debate on ABC.
Harris said to a gathering in Atlanta last month, “He won’t debate, but he and his running partner definitely seem to have a lot to say about me.” “Well, Donald, I really hope you’ll think twice before coming on the debate stage because, you know, if you have anything to say, say it to my face.”
During a news conference last week at his Florida club, Mar-a-Lago, Trump stated, “I look forward to the debates because I think we have to put the record straight.”
