Mike Johnson (R-LA), who was just chosen as House Speaker, said this week that life has no coincidences. He also said that God played a big part in his win.
When Johnson spoke to the House following the very first unanimous GOP vote since 2011, he said, “I believe that God has a plan for my life and for the lives of each of my fellow lawmakers.”
“In my opinion, there are no coincidences in a situation like this, and I want to share with all of my colleagues what I said to the Republicans in that meeting last night. I believe that the Holy Bible makes it abundantly clear that God is actually the one who puts people in power. All of you were raised up by him, and I believe that God planned and allowed each of us to end up here at this very moment in time.”
“This is what I believe. Today, I think we all have a huge duty to use the gifts God has bestowed upon us to serve the amazing people of this great country—they deserve it—and to keep our republic prominent as a source of light, hope, as well as freedom in a world that sorely requires it.”
Johnson also said he would pass a bill to give Israel more money to defend itself against the terrorist group Hamas.
“The very first bill that I will bring to the floor in a moment is going to be in favor of our dear allies in Israel. It’s the right thing to do.” Given this, we will be showing not only Israel but also the whole world that the horrible behavior of Hamas that we all have seen on TV is horrible and wrong. We’re going to fight for what’s right in that fight.”
This was the first election with a uniform vote since 2011 when John Boehner (R-OH) got the job. Johnson’s win propelled him from being vice chairman of the House Republican Conference to being the leader of the group. He serves as the 56th speaker of the House and is 51 years old.
