“On Friday, the Supreme Court turned down a desperate attempt by former Trump White House strategist Steve Bannon to avoid going to jail the following week while he filed an appeal against his conviction for ignoring a subpoena from a House committee looking into the disturbance that occurred on January 6, 2021, in the United States Capitol. Beginning on Monday, Bannon, 70, will serve a four-month jail sentence for contempt of Congress.
“On Friday, the Chief Justice [John Roberts] referred Bannon’s motion for release pending appeal to the Court, and the Court denied it,” said the Supreme Court in an unsigned, one-sentence decision.
The ruling follows the denial of a comparable motion earlier in June by an appeals court.
Elizabeth Prelogar, the Solicitor General, contended before the Supreme Court that Bannon’s legal representatives had to demonstrate that his case would be reversed upon appeal. The justices might have rejected the request based on this convincing argument.
