Social media users fact-checked Vice President Kamala Harris’ claim this week that former President Donald Trump would enact a federal ban on abortion and criticized her.
“Donald Trump would outlaw abortion nationwide,” tweeted Harris. I, along with President Joe Biden, will make every effort to thwart him and reinstate women’s autonomy over reproduction. Just three days prior, the vice president made a statement in which he reiterated his stance from the 2024 presidential campaign—that he would not sign a federal ban on abortion.
The community comment on X stated, “President Trump has consistently declared he will not sign a national abortion ban,” thereby fact-checking Harris’s assertion. Along with numerous links to news items from established media sites discussing Trump’s position on abortion, the fact-check included a link to a video that the former president uploaded on Truth Social in April, in which he stated that the states and “the will of the people” should decide abortion legislation.
Trump reaffirmed on Thursday at the CNN debate that he would not back federal restrictions on abortion or abortion-related medications. Additionally, he asserted that Democrats such as Biden represent the “radicals” in the abortion debate and upheld the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, partly due to Trump’s appointment of three conservative judges.
“You have access to late-term abortions under Roe v. Wade. Everything is up to you. You have complete freedom to do as you like. That isn’t something we consider positive. We consider it to be a radical move,” Trump remarked. “We believe that radicals are not Republicans, but Democrats.”
During the discussion, Biden pledged to uphold the pro-abortion provisions of Roe v. Wade.
In the years since the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Wome’s Health Organization, Democrats and the Biden campaign have pressed the topic of abortion. The pro-abortion side has had a number of victorious elections during the last two years when abortion is on the ballot, even in Republican areas.
Harris has a pattern of making things up on social media regarding Trump’s position on abortion. “Trump would strive to ban abortion nationwide, with or without the support of Congress,” the author wrote in a June 25 letter. During a speech in May, the vice president accused Trump of “gaslighting” Americans into thinking he would not sign legislation outlawing abortion nationwide.
“Enough gaslighting; we all know that Donald Trump will pass a national abortion ban if given the opportunity,” the woman uttered.
As the 2024 election draws near, Trump and his presidential campaign have approached the abortion issue strategically. Although the former president stated that he is in favor of states imposing abortion limits, he has publicly opposed the excessively conservative abortion legislation that has been passed in Arizona and Florida.
