The most recent Morning Consult poll found that most people who might vote in the Republican primary don’t like former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
Christie has had the biggest number of people who don’t like him in the GOP race for weeks. But this week’s numbers show that not only are people less likely to like the presidential candidate, but 51 percent of people don’t like him at all. Just 25% of people like Christie, which gives him a net positive grade of -26.
Christie keeps criticizing the former president, and he even said lately that he is “really concerned” regarding Trump’s “mental health.”
When asked about Trump’s attacks on the Newsmax TV show The Balance, Christie stated:
“I don’t agree with what Donald Trump did during the 2020 presidential race. I don’t agree with the way he has acted since the event. It is bad for the nation as a whole, in my opinion. I don’t think it fits with the position he held. But when an individual says things like that about someone who backed him in 2016, helped him get ready for the debates with Hillary Clinton, backed him in 2020, and helped him get ready for the debates with Joe Biden, I wonder how all that could have happened if I was so useless, stupid, and crazy.”
“How sad. He’s under a great deal of stress and pressure, and hearing him say these things worries me about his mental health.”
Former Vice President Mike Pence is the second least-liked choice, with 37% of people saying they don’t like him. Overall, though, his positive rate is still above water, as opposed to Christie’s, as 51% of people still like the former vice president.
One thing that both of these candidates have in common, though, is that they continue to say bad things about Trump. In August, Pence stated to CNN that Trump basically asked him to place him ahead of the Constitution and throw out the results of the election, which Trump disputed.
Notably, an additional Trump critic, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, also has a positive rate underwater.
Trump is still the most liked candidate, with 76 percent saying they like him. He is the clear leader in the GOP primary race. 65 percent of people said the same thing about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and 22 percent of people don’t like either of the two presidential candidates.
This part of the poll was done from September 7-10, 2023, with 818 people who might vote in the Republican primary. It has a range of variation of +/- 4%.
