In America, the flag is not just a piece of cloth. It is our history, our freedom, and our shared values woven together. It draped the coffins of our fallen heroes. It flew high when we fought for liberty. It represents every man, woman, and child who calls this great country home. And now, under the strong leadership of President Donald J. Trump, the American flag is finally being defended with the honor it deserves.
On July 24, 2024, something disgraceful happened in our nation’s capital. Pro-Palestinian protesters tore down three American flags from Union Station. They burned at least two of them and raised Palestinian flags in their place. They even burned an effigy of Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. This was not peaceful protest. It was a direct insult to the United States of America and everything we stand for.
But thank God, that kind of disrespect will not go unanswered anymore.
On August 25, 2025, President Trump signed a bold executive order. His message was simple: if you burn the American flag, you will face real consequences. This order makes it clear that desecrating the flag is not just some harmless act of “free speech.” It is a dangerous provocation that can stir up violence and weaken our national unity.
Under this new order, those who burn or destroy the American flag can be prosecuted under existing laws. If their actions are tied to violence, hate crimes, or destruction of property, the Department of Justice will step in. State and local authorities are also being asked to enforce laws like disorderly conduct and open burning restrictions. The message is clear: law and order will be restored.
And for foreign nationals—those who are not citizens—there will be even stronger consequences. If they burn our flag, they can lose their visas, have their green cards revoked, or even be deported. If someone wants to live in this country, they must respect its symbols. If they can’t, they are free to leave.
President Trump is also urging the Attorney General to find a strong case to challenge the Supreme Court’s 1989 ruling in Texas v. Johnson. That ruling, which allowed flag burning as protected speech, has long been a stain on our justice system. It sent the wrong message—that you can spit on the sacrifices of our veterans and call it “freedom.” It’s time that decision was revisited.
Some will argue that this new order goes against the First Amendment. But freedom does not mean chaos. It does not mean you can burn the very symbol of the freedom you claim to love. Rights come with responsibilities. If we do not defend our flag, how can we say we are defending our country?
Sadly, this kind of behavior has become more common in recent years. From anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles to pro-Hamas rallies in Washington, D.C., and even flag burnings at the Democratic National Convention, the far left continues to show their disdain for America. Even Vice President Kamala Harris, no friend of conservatives, had to admit that burning the flag and supporting terrorist groups like Hamas is beyond the pale.
Thankfully, the American people still care. Poll after poll shows that most citizens support restrictions on flag burning. Even back in 1989, more than 70 percent wanted it banned. Today, a majority of Republicans, and many independents and Democrats, still believe that burning our flag should be a crime.
President Trump has once again shown that he listens to the people. He stands for patriotism, for law and order, and for the soul of this nation. While others bow to political correctness and mob rule, he stands firm.
In this time of division, we need unity and strength. The American flag is a symbol that unites us all. And now, at long last, it will be protected with the seriousness it deserves.
Let this be a turning point. Let it be a reminder that America is still worth honoring—and defending.
