In a fit of political theater, he dragged First Lady Melania Trump into a rant about layoffs at the Washington Post, blaming Jeff Bezos for producing a successful documentary about her instead of keeping hundreds of journalists on his payroll.
This is a moment that tells us a great deal about the state of the modern Left. Rather than accepting the realities of the free market—the same market that built this great country—they throw tantrums when their failing institutions can no longer survive without endless handouts.
Let’s look at the facts. The Washington Post, once a respected name in journalism, has been bleeding readers for years. Its coverage has drifted so far left that it no longer represents the views of everyday Americans. It became a mouthpiece of the radical elite, not a source of honest news. When you produce something that people don’t want, they stop buying it. That’s how the free market works. And when that happens, businesses—yes, even newspapers—must make hard choices, like cutting jobs to stay afloat.
Jeff Bezos, for all his flaws, is a businessman. He didn’t become one of the richest men in the world by making emotional decisions. He bought the Washington Post in 2013, and for over a decade, he poured money into it. But even he seems to have realized that a news outlet full of leftist ideology and dwindling subscribers cannot survive on ideology alone. So he made a decision to lay off about 700 employees. It’s never easy, but it’s reality.
But Bernie Sanders, a man who has spent nearly his entire adult life in government and has rarely worked a real job, doesn’t understand that. He tweeted out his outrage, complaining that Bezos had the money to spend on a documentary about Melania Trump and a luxury yacht, so why couldn’t he keep funding the Post? Sanders misses the point entirely. Bezos didn’t lay off staff because he lacked the money. He did it because it no longer made sense to keep paying people to produce something the public no longer wants.
Even more shamefully, Sanders tried to smear Melania Trump in the process. What does she have to do with the failures of the Washington Post? Absolutely nothing. Her documentary, which grossed $7 million in its opening weekend, was a success. Audiences across the country connected with her story and her quiet strength. She’s a symbol of grace, dignity, and traditional values—something the Left has long sneered at.
The backlash to Sanders was swift and well-deserved. Americans are tired of millionaires like him, who live in luxury while preaching about fairness and equality. They’re tired of being told that prosperity is evil and that success should be punished. And they’re especially tired of seeing their First Lady dragged into petty political fights.
This is a lesson for all of us: socialism sounds nice in speeches, but it fails in practice. It leads to broken systems, failed newsrooms, and empty promises. Capitalism, with all its challenges, remains the best system for those who want to work hard, build something, and succeed.
We should applaud those who invest in stories that uplift rather than divide. We should support leaders who understand the importance of freedom, order, and self-reliance. And we must stand firm against those who use every crisis as an excuse to attack the American way of life.
Senator Sanders may not like it, but the truth is clear: America is waking up. We’re turning back to our roots—faith, family, and freedom. And no amount of noise from the socialist fringe can drown out that revival.
