Pelosi Went on National Television and Said Democrats Had ‘No Knowledge’ of Swalwell’s Behavior Then Willie Brown Called Her a Liar on the Record

Nancy Pelosi sat down in front of a CSPAN camera, looked directly into the lens, and delivered the following statement about Eric Swalwell’s sexual assault allegations: “Absolutely not true. None whatsoever. We had no knowledge.” No knowledge. None. Zero. The Democratic leadership of the United States House of Representatives — the people who controlled committee assignments, managed caucus discipline, and decided who got to sit in rooms where classified intelligence was discussed — had absolutely no idea that one of their members was allegedly assaulting women.

And then Willie Brown — the former mayor of San Francisco, a lifelong Democrat kingmaker, and a man who has exactly zero reasons to do Republicans any favors — went on the record and called her a liar.

Brown told reporters that “there have been rumors after rumors” about Swalwell’s conduct and that both Pelosi and Adam Schiff had “discussed the issues previously.” Not heard whispers. Not received anonymous tips. Discussed. As in sat down and talked about it. As in were aware of the problem, weighed the political implications, and decided to do absolutely nothing.

Let that land for a second. The same Nancy Pelosi who orchestrated two impeachments of Donald Trump based on a phone call and a protest. The same Nancy Pelosi who stood at a podium with tears in her eyes and told America that “no one is above the law.” The same Nancy Pelosi who ripped up the State of the Union address on live television because she wanted you to know how deeply she cared about the dignity of public institutions. That Nancy Pelosi knew one of her members was accused of being a sexual predator, and her response was to put him on the Intelligence Committee and send him on cable news every night to call other people immoral.

This isn’t even a cover-up. A cover-up implies they were trying to hide it. They weren’t hiding anything. They were just ignoring it. Because Eric Swalwell was useful. He went on MSNBC. He raised money. He voted the right way. And in Nancy Pelosi’s Washington, that’s worth more than the safety of every young staffer who had to work in the same building as him.

Kevin McCarthy confirmed it from the Republican side — every member of Congress knew. Every single one. This wasn’t a secret that was buried in a classified file somewhere. This was the kind of open secret that gets discussed in the Capitol cafeteria line, in the elevators, in the parking garage. “Don’t send your intern to that meeting if Swalwell’s going to be there.” That was the standard operating procedure. Not “report him to the Ethics Committee.” Not “call the police.” Not “hold a press conference and demand accountability.” Just quietly reroute the young women and hope nothing makes the papers.

We need to talk about what this means in the context of #MeToo, because the hypocrisy is so thick you could pave a highway with it.

Remember #MeToo? Remember when every corporation in America had to sit through mandatory training sessions because Democrats told us there was a systemic crisis of powerful men abusing their positions? Remember when Brett Kavanaugh’s entire life was put through a wood chipper because a woman said something happened at a party in 1982? Remember when Al Franken was forced to resign over a photograph? Remember when Andrew Cuomo was run out of the governor’s mansion over allegations that were substantially less severe than what Swalwell is now accused of?

Nancy Pelosi was the loudest voice in every single one of those situations. She was the moral authority. She was the one who told America that the Democratic Party would not tolerate this kind of behavior, that accountability was non-negotiable, that the era of powerful men getting away with it was over.

Except when the powerful man was one of hers. Then the era of getting away with it was very much still in progress.

Willie Brown didn’t have to say what he said. He’s eighty-something years old, he’s been a Democrat his entire life, and he has nothing to gain from contradicting Pelosi. But he did it anyway. Maybe because he’s old enough that he doesn’t care about political consequences anymore. Maybe because watching a woman go on national television and tell a lie that brazen was too much even for a career politician from San Francisco. Or maybe because Willie Brown understands something that Pelosi apparently doesn’t — that there are some things you don’t get to lie about, even in Washington.

The coverup is always worse than the crime. That’s what they told us about Nixon. That’s what they told us about Clinton. That’s what they told us about every Republican who ever had a bad week. The coverup is worse because it means the people at the top made a choice. They knew what was happening, they calculated the political cost of doing the right thing, and they decided that doing nothing was cheaper.

Pelosi made that calculation. Schiff made that calculation. The entire Democratic leadership made that calculation. And now a fifth accuser is stepping up to a microphone in Beverly Hills, and the woman who spent a decade telling America she was the last line of defense against powerful men who abuse their authority is on CSPAN saying “we had no knowledge.”

Willie Brown begs to differ. Kevin McCarthy begs to differ. And pretty soon, a grand jury in Manhattan is going to beg to differ too.

But sure, Nancy. You had no idea. None whatsoever.
