President Trump is once again putting government waste on notice with his latest executive order: a freeze on federal employee credit cards. With 4.6 million government credit cards responsible for a staggering $40 billion in spending last year, Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is stepping in to cut the bloat, expose fraud, and stop bureaucrats from treating taxpayer money like their personal piggy bank.
The US government currently has ~4.6M active credit cards/accounts, which processed ~90M unique transactions for ~$40B of spend in FY24.
DOGE is working w/ the agencies to simplify the program and reduce admin costs – we will report back in 1 week.https://t.co/Umuc0GLsvW pic.twitter.com/pikYyPIdHP

For years, Washington insiders have played fast and loose with government-issued credit cards, with little to no oversight on what exactly they’re buying. A Congressional review in 2014 found prohibited personal purchases, including luxury items and entertainment, but that was just a drop in the bucket compared to what DOGE is uncovering now. The problem? The federal swamp has no interest in transparency.
Trump’s order freezes spending on government credit cards for 30 days, giving DOGE time to implement a new tracking system that will log and justify every single transaction made with taxpayer dollars. While critical services like disaster relief and national security operations are exempt, every other agency is about to face the fiscal reckoning they’ve avoided for decades.
Of course, the big government crowd is already howling. Bureaucrats are fear-mongering that this will somehow cripple essential services, but the truth is, this is about cutting unnecessary spending, not stopping veterans from getting medical care or supplies. In reality, this order is long overdue.
For too long, Washington has lived by one simple rule: Spend now, explain never. Trump is flipping the script—if a bureaucrat wants to swipe that card, they’d better be ready to justify it.
Like clockwork, the left is already gearing up for a legal challenge, hoping that an activist judge will block yet another commonsense reform. But Trump’s America First administration isn’t backing down. Government spending is getting a long-overdue audit, and the DC freeloaders are finally sweating.
