A newly-elected Democratic congresswoman from Texas is demanding that the Mexican cartels, which are in command of the United States’ southwestern border, be defunded.
“We need to cut off the cartels’ funds,” American Congresswoman Mayra Flores said in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, adding that the criminal organizations from Mexico are the only ones that are benefiting from the current border situation.
In June, Flores became the first Mexican-born woman to be elected to the House of Representatives. She changed Texas Congressional District 34 from a long-time Democrat bastion.
“Sadly, we have a border that is under the control of organized crime groups,” Flores stated. The operational control along the border by the Gulf Cartel and Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas is regrettable. Currently, one of the most active human and drug trafficking routes in Flores’ district belongs to the Gulf Cartel. “It’s a terrible truth, but no one can enter this country without paying thousands of dollars to criminal organizations.”
She added that the problem has been largely neglected by most members of Congress, which has helped create a cycle of violence and abuse in which women and children are subjected to unimaginable horrors at the hands of cartel-connected smugglers.
Victims of sexual and physical assault are not uncommon. Victims are also snatched and held for ransom in other circumstances. “It is something that is happening, which in reality embarrasses me because it is happening in this country since we are better than that,” Flores added.
According to Flores, restricting immigration and streamlining the immigration procedure will aid in the dismantling of cartels.
“I think we need to secure our border and assist honest people in coming here lawfully,” she added. “Where there is a safe process where individuals can come without having to go through hell, as I said before.”
