According to a Pew Research Center survey, American voters are rejecting gender ideology—which maintains that people can choose to identify as or become the opposing sex—and accepting biological facts more and more.
The survey report states that “since 2017, the share of voters who believe that a person’s sex at birth determines whether they are a man or a woman has increased, and this growth has occurred among both parties.”
In 2017, 53 percent of voters agreed that birth sex determines gender. According to the report, that percentage will rise by more than ten percentage points to 65 percent in 2024.
Republicans and Republican-leaning Americans are overwhelmingly accepting of men’s and women’s biological realities. In 2024, 91 percent of voters would hold the view that sex is unchangeable, up from 79 percent in 2017.
Despite the fact that Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters are far more likely to support gender ideology, the poll indicated that these voters are also becoming more accepting of fundamental biology, with 39 percent of them in 2024 compared to 30 percent in 2017.
The majority of respondents (56%) also state that they find it awkward when people refer to themselves with the pronouns “they” or “them” rather than the grammatically correct “he” or “she.” About 43% of respondents said they feel at ease referring to people who use “they” or “them” as pronouns.
The poll report states that “voters under 50 are more comfortable with people using gender-neutral pronouns than those 50 and older.”
“There is an age divide in the support bases of both candidates, but it is most noticeable among Biden supporters: 79 percent of his followers between the ages of 18 and 49 say they feel comfortable, while only 56 percent of his supporters over the age of 50 say the same.”
The results support recent polls that show Americans rejecting gender dogma. For instance, there has been a sharp decline in support for allowing men to play on female sports teams, and the majority of voters oppose hormone therapy and sex-mutilating procedures for minors. A sizable majority believe politicians utilize transgenderism as a diversion from crucial political issues.
Between April 8 and April 14, 2024, 8,709 people responded to the survey. There is a 1.5 percentage point margin of error.
