President Trump is making good on his promise to take a wrecking ball to the bloated, bureaucratic nightmare that is the Department of Education. According to reports, an executive order to begin dismantling the agency is locked and loaded, and Trump is expected to sign it as early as Thursday. If that happens, it would be a historic win for parents, students, and anyone who values local control over education instead of federal indoctrination.
This is exactly what Trump promised on the campaign trail. Time and again, he made it clear that the federal Department of Education has been nothing more than a left-wing tool to push radical ideology on American children. From woke gender theories to Critical Race Theory, the department has spent decades hijacking classrooms, undermining parents, and funneling billions of taxpayer dollars into leftist programming. Trump’s executive order is the first major step in sending education back to the states, where it belongs.
A draft of the order obtained by The Wall Street Journal spells it out plainly: “The experiment of controlling American education through Federal programs and dollars—and the unaccountable bureaucrats those programs and dollars support—has failed our children, our teachers, and our families.” That’s putting it lightly. The Department of Education has spent over 40 years churning out failing schools, pushing disastrous policies, and creating a system where kids can graduate without being able to read at grade level but are somehow experts on “white privilege.”
Education Secretary Linda McMahon, who was confirmed Monday, is already in action. She has vowed to “restore the rightful role of state oversight in education and to end the overreach from Washington.” That means real school choice, real accountability, and an end to the days when leftist activists could use federal dollars to brainwash kids under the guise of education.
Of course, the usual suspects are already losing their minds over this. Democrats and their media allies are clutching their pearls, calling this a “threat to public education.” Let’s be honest: the real threat to public education has been the federal government itself. Since its inception, the Department of Education has ballooned into a multi-billion-dollar monstrosity that has only made schools worse.
Trump’s move is long overdue. If the Senate follows through, the Department of Education could be the next relic of failed big-government policy sent to the dustbin of history. It’s time to put parents and states back in charge of their children’s education and stop funding an institution that exists solely to serve the interests of the teachers’ unions, not the students.
