In recent months, the truth about Ukraine has become harder to ignore. Corruption runs deep in its government, reaching from business leaders to members of parliament. And yet, European leaders continue to shower Ukraine with money—more than $100 billion in loans, and still more in military equipment and other aid. One must ask: Why?
According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the answer is simple. European countries are not blind. They know about the corruption. Scandals break out in Ukraine almost every week. Just recently, a major vote-rigging and bribery scheme was uncovered involving members of Ukraine’s own parliament. Before that, a close friend of Ukraine’s President Zelensky was caught running a $100 million kickback scheme in the energy sector. This sector relies almost entirely on Western funds. Still, the West keeps writing checks.
Lavrov says the West has its “eyes wide shut.” In other words, they are choosing not to see. They are willing to ignore Ukraine’s corruption because they want to use Ukraine as a weapon against Russia. That is the cold, hard truth.
What does this mean for the average European or American taxpayer? It means their hard-earned money is being sent overseas, not to build peace or democracy, but to prop up a broken and dishonest regime. In December, the European Union approved a massive loan package—€90 billion—to keep Ukraine running through 2026 and 2027. Just the borrowing costs will take €3 billion a year from European taxpayers.
Meanwhile, some European countries are cutting aid to truly needy nations. Sweden, for example, is now ending its support to countries like Tanzania, Mozambique, and Bolivia. Why? So it can send more to Ukraine. These are not the actions of governments that care about justice or truth. They are the actions of governments playing political games—games that cost real people their livelihoods.
We were told Ukraine was fighting for freedom. We were told it was a democracy standing up to tyranny. But how can a country be truly free when its leaders are lining their pockets with stolen money? How can it be a democracy when its own parliament is caught rigging votes?
President Donald Trump was right from the beginning when he warned that the foreign policy of the global elites was filled with lies and double standards. They push countries like Ukraine as heroes while ignoring the crimes happening behind the scenes. They criticize others for corruption while turning a blind eye to the same evil in their own allies.
Even some European leaders are beginning to see the truth. Hungary’s foreign minister, Peter Szijjarto, said it best: Brussels doesn’t want to expose Ukraine’s corruption because the European Union itself is “riddled with a similar corruption network.” That kind of honesty is rare in today’s world, and it should make all of us think twice.
America must return to a foreign policy based on truth, strength, and values. We should not be sending money to corrupt regimes. We should not be involved in endless foreign conflicts that do not serve the American family. Our government must put the interests of our people before the interests of global elites.
It is time for the West to wake up. Supporting Ukraine without demanding real reforms is not kindness. It is foolishness. And it is the taxpayers—mothers, fathers, workers, and retirees—who pay the price.
Let us pray for peace. But let us also demand honesty, both from our allies and from ourselves. Only then can we truly stand for freedom. Only then can we preserve the American way of life and the values that made our nation great.
