Former President Trump stated in an interview with Breitbart News that he thinks Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell shouldn’t continue to be the leader of Senate Republicans due to the Kentucky senator’s evident health difficulties and believes the party will need a new face at the top of the conference.
Trump claimed to have seen the footage of McConnell experiencing some sort of medical issue during a news conference this week during an almost hour-long interview at his golf club in northern New Jersey this week.
When asked if he saw the footage of McConnell at the news conference, Trump said, “I did,” showing the Senate Republican leader stumbling in mid-sentence before several Senate Republicans led him to his office. Shortly after, McConnell went back to the platform and continued speaking. Later, however, it was revealed that since suffering a terrible fall down hotel stairs earlier this year, McConnell had suffered many additional serious health problems, including an earlier-than-reported fall at the airport in early July. Republican senators are apparently deeply afraid McConnell is in jeopardy in the long run, despite the fact that they are now openly endorsing him.
When questioned about McConnell’s health, Trump stated that he found it “sad.” However, he also criticized McConnell for helping Democratic President Biden over the course of several years with important agenda items, including the approval of key components of Biden’s plan. Biden required at least 10 Republican senators to support the majority of his spending proposals during the first two years of his administration, despite the fact that Democrats dominated both the House and the Senate due to the Senate’s filibuster rules. These spending increases have stopped since Republicans regained the House in the 2022 midterm elections, but throughout Biden’s first two years in office, Senate Republicans headed by McConnell approved increases in spending of trillions of dollars by casting their votes to advance legislation in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
Trump further told Breitbart News that McConnell needs to vacate his position as Senate Republican leader and be replaced by a more capable individual.
When asked if Senate Republicans needed a new leader, Trump replied, “We have to have that. No, that’s what we need. There are several outstanding senators who would be excellent in that role. But it’s still astounding that McConnell would do that, and I sincerely hope he’s doing well.”
When asked who he thought would make a better Senate leader as compared to McConnell, Trump didn’t specifically identify anyone but did mention that he had “a lot of outstanding relationships” in both the Senate as well as the House. Trump has received support from ten senators in the US so far for the 2024 election. In terms of governors, both West Virginia Governor Jim Justice along with South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster support Trump. Trump has scores, over seventy, House endorsements.
I have many wonderful ties with the Senate and the House, perhaps much more so with the House,” Trump stated. “The House voted unanimously on the whole impeachment charade; I believe the Republican majority was 196 to zero. Jamie Comer is doing a fantastic job, in my opinion, as Jim Jordan and everyone else. Jim Jordan. There are many members of the House who work very hard. Matt Gaetz is performing admirably. He is a tough cookie and is succeeding brilliantly. Marjorie Taylor Greene has accomplished a great deal. Many people are interested in what she has to say.”
