The Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) might bring in private companies to do dragnet social media surveillance against Trump supporters and other alleged extremists in order to unlawfully be able to conduct blatant violations of Americans’ 4th Amendment by bringing in corporations, the WSJ has said.
Using January 6 as an excuse, the DHS wishes to use private firms to get information that can then be claimed will lead to terrorism so dissidents can then be targeted and stripped of their rights.
DHS official John Cohen is spearheading the plan that would push for private firms to break the civil liberties of Americans to boost the domestic police state in the country.
“What we are talking about now is dramatically increasing our focus,” Mr. Cohen said during an interview.
Adam Schwartz, a lawyer at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, is against these plans to further destroy Americans’ constitutional protections.
“We do not back an expansion of social-media spying for the sake of preventing the next attack against the Capitol,” Schwartz said.
“There is a true temptation, once the tool is there…to say, ‘Why not use it for these other reasons?’” said Rachel Waldman, deputy director of the Brennan Center, sharing her worries about the Orwellian program.
