Target Customer Tries to Shame Employee Over Charlie Kirk Shirt — It Backfires

A woman shopping at a Target in Chico, California recently learned the hard way that bullying a retail worker over politics doesn’t always end with applause from the internet.

The incident began when a TikToker—now widely dubbed “Target Karen”—decided to publicly berate a Target employee for wearing a red Charlie Kirk “Freedom” T-shirt while on the job. Instead of the viral validation she clearly expected, the confrontation backfired spectacularly and triggered a police investigation, public backlash, and an outpouring of support for the employee she targeted.

In the now-viral video, the employee—identified by many online as Jeanie—calmly explained that her shirt complied with Target’s dress code. “It’s a red shirt. I can wear any red shirt,” she said. The customer wasn’t having it. “It’s a Charlie Kirk shirt,” the woman snapped, before escalating to calling the employee “f*cking stupid” and accusing her of supporting racism.

Throughout the encounter, Jeanie remained composed. “I’m sorry, but I’m not gonna stand here and argue with you,” she said, attempting to disengage. That only seemed to inflame the situation further. The customer demanded a manager and insisted the employee should not be “allowed” to wear the shirt, calling it “un-f*cking-acceptable.”

The employee’s response was simple and dignified: “That’s your opinion, ma’am. Have a nice day.” She then walked away as the woman muttered an insult under her breath.

Instead of earning praise, the TikToker quickly found herself on the receiving end of intense scrutiny. Her account, which reportedly had nearly 20,000 followers, was set to private as users identified her as Michelea Ponce, an alleged employee of Enloe Health, a nonprofit health system. Enloe Health released a statement acknowledging the incident and confirming that both an internal review and a Chico Police Department investigation were underway, citing concerns about potential threats and harassment connected to the viral video.

The public reaction has been stark. Many saw the incident as a textbook example of left-wing moral bullying—using accusations of “racism” as a bludgeon to silence ordinary Americans who dare express views outside the approved narrative. Critics noted that the customer could have quietly spoken to management but instead chose public humiliation and online shaming.

Meanwhile, support for the Target employee has surged. A crowdfunding campaign aimed at giving her a vacation quickly approached $70,000. Turning Point USA COO Tyler Bowyer also weighed in, offering to honor her at the group’s upcoming AmericaFest, calling her a “patriotic hero.”

In the end, the episode served as a reminder: ordinary Americans are growing tired of being harassed, filmed, and attacked simply for refusing to bow to ideological bullies—and sometimes, standing your ground quietly speaks louder than any rant ever could.
