The ICE Agent the Media Loves to Demonize Just Saved a Child’s Life

You’ve heard the narrative.

ICE agents are villains. They’re cruel. They’re heartless. That’s the caricature repeated endlessly.

But here’s what happened in Plymouth, Minnesota on Friday.

An off-duty ICE officer was eating lunch.

A mother was screaming.

Her 4-year-old son was underwater in a hotel pool — for five minutes.

And the men the headlines usually condemn didn’t hesitate. They ran toward the chaos.

Two Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, off duty at the time, immediately jumped into action after the panicked mother begged them to save her son, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security.

The boy had gone into the pool to retrieve a toy. He didn’t come back up.

Five minutes underwater.

That’s an eternity.

The officers began CPR instantly, before Plymouth Police even arrived. When local officers took over, CPR continued for another 10 minutes.

Then the miracle happened.

The child began breathing on his own.

He was transported to a local medical center and was reported to be awake and alert.

The Plymouth Police Department didn’t mince words about what those first few minutes meant.

“In a situation like this, the first few minutes of emergency aid and quality CPR are critical. Without the quick response and professional actions [of the ICE officers], the outcome of this event would have likely been tragic,” the department said.

They added: “On behalf of the Plymouth Police Department, I want to extend our thanks and gratitude for the efforts [of the officers] in saving the life of a 4-year-old boy. Much more than being in the right place at the right time, the ability to work effectively and efficiently in a chaotic and emotional scene is admirable. Truly excellent work.”

According to police, one of the ICE officers “tried to downplay” his heroic actions.

That’s often the mark of real heroism — no press conference, no self-promotion. Just action.

Deputy Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis also praised the agents.

“I want to take a moment to commend the heroism and swift action taken by these agents to save the life of a sweet, innocent child,” she said. “If our agents had not been there and stepped up, this would have been a tragic outcome.”

Read that again.

“If our agents had not been there and stepped up, this would have been a tragic outcome.”

Plymouth is a suburb of Minneapolis — a region where law enforcement has often faced intense political scrutiny and criticism.

Yet in that hotel pool, none of that mattered.

There were no politics. No debates. No narratives.

There was a child underwater.

And two men who ran toward danger without hesitation.

It’s worth remembering moments like this.

Behind every badge is a human being — a father, a mother, a neighbor — trained to act when seconds matter most.

This time, those seconds meant the difference between life and death.

And because two ICE agents stepped up, a 4-year-old boy is alive today.
