On Monday, President Joe Biden revealed to late-night comedy show Seth Myers the specifics of covert discussions over Israeli detainees. He revealed the negotiating positions of a significant friend of the United States and made success predictions that all parties involved in the negotiations felt were untimely.
While enjoying ice cream with Seth Myers, the host of NBC’s Late Night, Biden expressed his wish for a “ceasefire” by Monday of the following week. He did not say whether he meant a short-term or long-term truce, and neither Israel nor Hamas denied the existence of any such agreement.
In reality, reports surfaced on Monday indicating that Hamas had reportedly rejected the parameters of a suggested framework for a settlement, dashed hopes for an accord that had momentarily surfaced over the weekend.
Biden revealed that Israel had offered to halt the war during the forthcoming Islamic holy month of Ramadan, in addition to projecting an unlikely outcome for the negotiations. This revealed an ally’s public stance that was meant to be an offer rather than a firm commitment in the event of a lack of mutual agreement.
Throughout Ramadan, Muslim armies have frequently engaged in combat and have even declared war, most famously on Yom Kippur in 1973.
Speaking on Tuesday, Tal Heinrich, a spokesman for the Israeli government, stated that there was no deal with Hamas and that its demands, which included ending the conflict and having Israel leave the Gaza Strip, were “outlandish” and came from “another planet.” She cited remarks made on Sunday by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu on CBS’s Face the Nation: “Hamas began out with these insane demands.” Furthermore, even if they do leave them behind and enter what is known as the stadium, they are still outside of the city. It’s too soon to tell if they are abandoning them. They inhabit another world.
“As far as the objectives of this conflict are concerned, there is no divergence between D.C. and Jerusalem,” Heinrich said to reporters on Tuesday. She did, however, imply that no agreement was going to happen by saying that Hamas’s demands are “delusional” and that they “ought to come down to earth.”
Democrats and the media said that President Trump had disclosed secret material to the Russians during diplomatic encounters throughout his administration; he refuted these claims, despite having the legal authority to declassify any information.
Before Tuesday’s primary, which he is sure to win but may face a boycott by Dem Party primary voters angry about the Gaza conflict, critics have conjectured that Biden sought to placate Arab and Muslim voters in Michigan.
