Biden Demands Removal Of Popular Tobacco Product

The Biden administration insists on enforcing a menthol cigarette ban, even though it may negatively impact hundreds of thousands of jobs and enrage a crucial constituency.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in April of 2022 that “proposed product standards to restrict all distinguishing tastes (other than tobacco) in cigars and prohibit menthol as a characterizing flavor in cigarettes.”

According to the FDA, “menthol is a flavor enhancer with a minty taste and scent that lessens the harshness and discomfort of smoking.” This makes menthol cigarettes more appealing and convenient to use, especially for young adults and children. Additionally, menthol enhances the addictive properties of nicotine by interacting with it in the brain. The taste, tactile sensations, and way that menthol interacts with nicotine in the brain make it more likely that young people who start smoking menthol cigarettes will eventually switch to regular usage. Additionally, menthol makes it more difficult for users to give up smoking.

As the last stage of the rulemaking process, the FDA has submitted these regulations to the Office of Management and Budget for review. “The FDA remains committed to creating tobacco standards for menthol inside cigarettes and characterizing flavors inside cigars as expeditiously as possible,” an FDA spokesperson said. “These product standards continue to be our top priorities, as we have stated.”

Black people, who make up a significant portion of Biden’s support base, stand to lose a great deal from this. According to Bloomberg, the FDA has “set a deadline for publishing its final ruling on menthol by August 2023.” Tobacco companies have aggressively marketed to black smokers in black neighborhoods and have sponsored events such as jazz concerts. That was postponed until March 2024 after being postponed in December.

The National Assc. of Convenience Stores (NACS) says that a ban on cigarettes with menthol would result in a $2.16 billion drop in income for the convenience business. The average convenience store would sell $160,107 in tobacco products yearly and $72,285 in non-tobacco miscellaneous items.

According to Javier Palomarez, president and CEO of the U.S. Hispanic Business Council (USHBC), “the proposed prohibition, while well-intentioned, could have had far-reaching economic ramifications for convenience shops by slashing 30% of sales and the livelihoods of over 600,000 people,” as he stated to Fox News Digital.

Roger Williams (R-TX), the chairman of the House Small Business Committee, said, “Unfortunately, the Biden White House has proposed another rule that will disproportionally affect our nation’s small companies.” “Banking menthol cigarettes would merely create a black market for these items and result in an estimated $2 billion loss in sales at convenience outlets across the country.”
