Whoopi Goldberg asserted on Wednesday that Republicans were attempting to “bring slavery back,” and she implied that an active court would be the only thing standing between them and this goal.
Goldberg made the remarks on Wednesday’s episode of ABC’s noon chat show, “The View.” She expressed her displeasure that the Arizona Supreme Court was battling to regress society by upholding 1864 legislation that outlawed most abortions and came before Arizona became a state.
Goldberg said, “Look at the things that they are rolling back.” “Recall that I mentioned decades ago that they had the desire to reinstate slavery in their thinking. They do not mind at all. You see, things do change. You know, one of the nice things about the Supreme Court is that you can challenge decisions to ensure improvements. Generally speaking, you do not fight to make things worse.
“And how is that going to roll if you are comfortable with things going back to the time when they were not even a state and we had no say?” She went on to say that the next item to get illegal would be birth control.
Then, cohost Sunny Hostin intervened, accusing Justice Samuel Alito of writing the majority opinion that ultimately led to the 1973 abortion case Roe v. Wade, due to his reference to legislation that had been in effect since 1868.
“He provided the states with a road map so they could consult their literature and travel back to the 1860s, even prior to Arizona’s 1912 founding,” according to Hostin.
When Joy Behar mentioned that former President Donald Trump had appointed Alito, whom former President George W. Bush had nominated in 2005, Hostin agreed.
Moments later, Behar had to correct herself, adding, “Let me make a correction.” Not Trump, but George W. Bush was the one who appointed Alito. Trump’s admission of the others benefited Alito.
“Yes, he did,” Hostin said once again.
